* Take control
Choose from a variety of status messages for any occasion. Use Windows Live Contacts to control your personal information—who sees it and what they see.
* Share yourself
Share your personal files, photos, and videos of any size. Just drag and drop into a Shared Folder.

* Make a difference
Join the i’m™ initiative and every time you have a conversation using i’m, Microsoft will donate a portion of the program's advertising revenue to the cause of your choice. The more you chat, the more you help make the world a little better place to live.

What's with the ridiculous "Windows Live Installer" on this? I just want to install Messenger at this time. Very strange. I'm not even going to try running this installer. I'll just wait for a proper MSN Messenger release/installer/update, thanks.

When was the last time there was a MSN Messenger? It's been Windows Live Messenger for close to a year now, if not more.

Where to get the standalone Live Messenger installer?
(1 reply) #3 nickels on 06 Sep 2007 - 09:58
this is how the beta 1 was installed
#3.1 +TCLN Ryster on 06 Sep 2007 - 19:23
Wrong. All the previous 8.5 betas have had a standalone installer that you download.

With Windows Live Suite getting ready for release, I don't think you have much of a choice if you want Messenger 8.5 on your system...

I have a lot of choice.

Such as leaving this crapware alone!!

You mean people still actually use these things? I do not know a single soul who still has an IM program on their machines. Of course, I tell everyone whose computer I work on how insecure and crapware loaded they all are!!
ESPECIALLY this one!!

Do you seriously expect we believe this?

Crapware-loaded? Did you ever try MessPatch for Windows Live Messenger? I guess not.

An advice: if you can search in it, Internet can be VERY useful at times.

We have a winner! The most ignorant post i've read on here in months. No really, hats off to you, you've excelled in your field of knowledge about all things IM. May we only hope you don't work on too many machines spreading this filth all around.
#4.4 vibeone on 06 Sep 2007 - 14:37
you are absolutely the most moronic idiot I have ever seen post on Neowin.

There are arguments, and very stupid people here at times, but you have lowered the bar by quite a way.

You shouldn't be allowed near a computer since you are clearly one of the most stupid people in the world.

There's a tweak to fix this:

Agreed, but it takes a long time to download and install everything compared to the old installer.
#8 Smashing Pumpkin on 06 Sep 2007 - 11:54
I hope a stand alone installer appears, this sucks!
#9 Chokes on 06 Sep 2007 - 12:26
The installer dont want to install on Vista Ultimate X64... wow!

What ****es me off about Windows Live Messenger is that nobody seems to care about performance, I read the Windows Live team blog and the WLM changelog but they NEVER say anything regarding performance improvements.

With each new version it seems they just add more bloat and needless features, how about removing all the fat and making it look like Windows native software, for once?
#10.1 EvilDude on 06 Sep 2007 - 13:37
Agreed. I've gone to task manager and found WLM using second highest amount of RAM, and in total has used MORE I/O bytes than any other process (this is on a system with google desktop etc, and I go for many days without restarts). I end up exiting WLM completely and restarting when I want it because it just uses up so much RAM. Really is sad how long it takes to start up / show the main window. It's an IM client, it should not take this long.
#10.2 Esvandiary on 07 Sep 2007 - 00:04
Whilst I agree with the comments about it not looking native and being too bloated, but I must say having just installed Beta 2 the speed increase - especially on startup - is phenomenal.
#11 T.W. on 06 Sep 2007 - 13:19
Does anyone know how to get the damn installer to work on Windows Server 2003?
#12 eSouL on 06 Sep 2007 - 14:45
Grab the beta 2 standalone installer from here.
#13 NateB1 on 06 Sep 2007 - 15:08
I guess I'm going against the curve, but I actually like the integrated installer. I use some of the other apps, such as Writer and Photo Gallery. It makes installing those apps after a reformat easier.
#14 .AlleymaN on 06 Sep 2007 - 15:40
Did it install Windows Desktop search for anybody else?

I didnt check any option for it to install WDS but it did. ****ed me off.

Thanks, xMorpheousx416, but that link doesn't say nothing... It just points to another webpost that tells what's new from version 8.1 to 8.5.

I was asking the changelog from 8.5 beta 1 to beta 2.

So... what's new in Messenger Beta 2?

If you downloaded our Beta 1 build, you may not think that much has changed. While the look and feel is almost the same, we listened to your feedback and fixed many of the top issues reported by our customers. THANK YOU to all of our beta testers who reported issues. thumbs_up

For those of you who didn't download our Beta 1 build, you can see a recap of what's new in Nicole's earlier post.

#15.4 miguel_montes on 07 Sep 2007 - 09:20
Funny, but that's not a changelog.
#16 leesmithg on 06 Sep 2007 - 16:42
majorgeeks has standalone messenger installer.

I updated live mail and messenger and so-far-so-good.
#17 EL1TE on 06 Sep 2007 - 16:50
Hi everone, see THIS (in Neowin Forum) if you can't install with the new Live Installer.

However you can Download the STAND-ALONE installer HERE (Please note that the server is overloaded)

i have the new build installed however i have yet to actually see anything that has changed in this beta version than the other versions of the beta. so can someone either update us with the change log or at least just tell us what the differences are so that we can figure out the difference. because honestly i am not sure why there is even a update if there is nothing that i being changed. they could have just left it for the final release of the software.
#19 darkpuma on 07 Sep 2007 - 01:59
hmmmm, dont really like what they did to the ui = /.... i really liked the white 'swooshes' in the old interface, dont get why they got rid of them... may sound shallow but i liked them so fck off lol
#20 CrazyDelta on 07 Sep 2007 - 17:31
After seeing the changelog, I don't understand the point of this 8.5 (beta whatever) release as compared to 8.1

I mean, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?" - seriously, what are they thinking just tinkering around with the "Look and Feel"?
It was cosmetically absolutely fine!
Focus on the damn performance and try lowering the memory it hogs! I just noticed mine eating away 44mb while Miranda sits there nicely on like 7mb.

And yes, the new look is a step backwards. I am gonna stick with 8.1 for now till someone tells me there has been performance enhancements.
