The GIMP is a multiplatform photo manipulation tool. GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. The GIMP is suitable for a variety of image manipulation tasks, including photo retouching, image composition, and image construction. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

Changelog:
  • Support long layer names in PSD files
  • Improved EXIF handling in the JPEG file plug-in
  • Added control for the playback speed in the Animation Playback plug-in
  • Avoid needless image preview invalidation
  • Allow to edit the image comment in the Image Properties dialog
  • Further improved rectangle tools
  • Made JPEG save parameters user-configurable
  • Avoid color conversions between identical ICC color profiles
  • Improved Print plug-in
  • Improved loading and saving of indexed TGA images
  • Bug fixes and code cleanup

Will Gimp ever stop using GTK... :/
#1.1 noxcuse on 01 Aug 2007 - 23:22
What wrong with GTK then?

They looks pretty good these days on Windows-based machine.
#1.2 CaKeY on 02 Aug 2007 - 00:46
Probably not... seeing as how GTK stands for Gimp ToolKit. http://www.gtk.org/

Gimp is mainly a Linux program which compiles on windows using cygwin.
GTK+ is your best choice for a toolkit on Linux.
Qt4 is supposedly good too although I am yet to try it.

Yeah, and how did you pay for Photoshop? By downloading a cracked copy, I bet? Just like I have several times, although never have used the HUGE a** program.

TheGimp is an excellent FREE alternative.

I agree. Unfortunately there are people who sit there pressing F5 on the main page all day long waiting for a news article they can troll in.

Photoshop has become bloated junk and I wouldn't use it if I wasn't required to. At the end of the day though, if you know your tools it doesn't matter what you use as long as the work gets done.

Bloated? Hardly. Photoshop CS3 runs A LOT faster for me than CS1 or CS2 ever has. And I use Photoshop at work, so no cracked copy.

You never used Photoshop on a Mac, did you? It looks just like The GIMP there. What now?

I use it all the time on my PowerBook. They look nothing alike.

They're revamping the entire interface. It was on Digg, looks awesome.
#3.1 JiveMasterT on 02 Aug 2007 - 12:19
Can you link to that? I must have missed it and I can only find links to Gimp Shop - not any new Gimp interface.

But...that's just a concept, I believe. It would be nice if they got rid of the HUGE visibility and lock icons in the layer previews to shave maybe 16px of width from that entire floating window. And shrink the statusbar. And give it a color scheme that doesn't look like an elephant trampled it into the mud.

A single UI? Crappy ****! That's one of The GIMP's advantages: Full Screen editing!
#4 EchoNoise on 02 Aug 2007 - 03:30
I use gimpshop

How does Gimp compare to Paint.net? Can those two programs be compared or are they in a complete league of their own?
#5.1 th3rEsa on 02 Aug 2007 - 19:09
GIMP is sth like Photoshop, while Paint.NET is not.
#6 Iyeru on 12 Aug 2007 - 14:41
GIMP Isn't like photoshop. It doesn't even have the blending options that you can access in Photoshop. I dislike it, but then again like it to a degree. For those wanting to know the status of blending options among other photoshop-specific things: Go Here
