Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

I don't like the new icon. Maybe also because I don't get why a bird is representative for a "pidgin".

And I personally don't like GAIM/Pidgin at all. I tried it a while ago but I didn't get how to set it up properly, so I started using Miranda IM instead; though I must admit that I didn't give version 2 a try yet.

because "pidgin" sounds like pigeon, which is a bird?

The big difference with miranda is you don't have to go downloading all kinds of plugins in gaim, but I must admit miranda + plugins is great

try it, I changed to gaim from miranda

Because Adium (based on the underlying Gaim code) is represented by a Duck.
Finch (a library) is represented by - strangely enough - a Finch.
Pidgin sounds like Pigeon, and by choosing the icon they have, all of the purple-based apps have bird logos.

Or something like that. I read a quote about this earlier.

The name changed because AOL is run by jerks. they wanted to sue GAIM because the letters AIM are in it -__-.

so they changed it to pidgin, which is similar to pidgeon (to avoid more possible copyright problems) and cause pidgeons are messenger birds.

And the new 2.0 works alot better then the old ones, i like it alot, i think i will use this one from now on

This is completely wrong. The reason the name Pidgin was chosen is because Pidgins are simplified languages used by two peoples that do not share a common language - it's often a mix of both languages, with a third sometimes thrown in. This ties into the fact that the program is a multi-protocol (multi-language) messenger program.

I'm quite surprised to see how good GTK+ can look on Windows (from your screenshot).

Is anyone having trouble connecting to Pidgin's web site or am I just the unlucky one?

I dont like the new Icons, i liked having Protocol icons next to users name, not a green circle or a red circle.

I never figured out how to install new GTK+ themes for Gaim... always used Wimp.. and while that looked alright I guess it still had the Linux feel to it.

Edit: Wow, the new MS-Windows theme changes dynamically along with an msstyle change.. Now that alone is worth the upgrade. =)

Which is as it should be. With all software.

Agreed. It takes the hassle out of trying to find a matching skin.
