A leaked document, supposedly from AT&T's internal network, has been making its rounds around the internet. The document compares the features of the Palm Pre and Apple's iPhone in such a way, that it would seem the Pre couldn't hold a candle to the vastly popular iPhone.

The Palm Pre has generated an enormous amount of hype, and AT&T must be finally taking notice of it. The result? Some really drastic measures. AT&T has been circulating the document (above picture) amongst its employees in a possible attempt to lure customers away from the Pre. It shows a biased comparison between the features of both handsets, which leans heavily towards the iPhone.

Some debatable 'shortcomings' of the Pre include:
  • Limited choice of colours for the handset
  • "Unproven" App Store
  • The UI is "not intuitive"
  • Limited free Wi-Fi access because the Pre is unable to take advantage of the free access point at Starbucks

The document also points at some very valid flaws in the Pre, such as the fact that it is not a world phone. However, there has been some speculation that a GSM version of the Pre would be released to carriers worldwide.

However, it does beg the question. How can one make such radical arguments against a product that has not even been released? You be the judge.

Um, what is so surprising about the standard marketing spin doctor prepared talking points for salesmen document we see above? I wouldn't be surprised if Apple PR itself prepared this, just like every other corporate shill does for a living for their companies.

# "Unapproved" App Store

The document says unproven which is quite different from unapproved; aside from the fact that it's true.

Whooops! You are right. My bad.

Yea, but honestly, the "UI is 'not intuitive'"?????? The UI is amazing! and the use of Cards blows any fart app the iphone has away!
#5 s0nic69 on 24 Apr 2009 - 05:00
this cant be real, can it? why would they just make a document that trashes the phone. the wording almost seems to go out of its way to insult the palm.
#6 +Xerxes on 24 Apr 2009 - 05:16
This is hardly surprising, considering AT&T carry the iPhone (and it's making them a nice profit) they'll say anything to make the iPhone look good. For some reason this reminds me of the ad LG did bashing the iPhone
#7 WhoTheF on 24 Apr 2009 - 05:24
It's a Sprint phone, so what was AT&T doing with this?
#8 LiquidSolstice on 24 Apr 2009 - 07:11
Limited choice of colors.

Because the iPhone comes in more colors than black and white?

AT&T is starting to sound like Apple.

This is just standard sales procedure! Before I got my iPhone (can only get them on O2 in the UK) I went into my existing carriers store (T-Mobile) just to see what they had that would compete as a possible alternative before I made up my mind. They dug out the Samsung Tocco and basically set about the iPhone, slating it only having 3G, worse camera, etc - they tried pretty hard. But unfortunately it wasn't enough!

So you're buying a Palm..?
#11 Solid Knight on 24 Apr 2009 - 08:39
Is there a benefit to having white or black memory?

wouldn't dragging music files into itunes then syncing them to the iphone be an extra step against just dragging music files directly into the palm pre?

What do you mean by "dragging music files into itunes"? When you install iTunes, it automatically finds and organizes your music files. If you want to add other files later, you have it add a folder to the library. What do you do? Do you really sit there and manually dig through your music folders to find songs you want to add to your player and then copy them to your player??

iTunes does a lot more than sync the files to your phone. It gets album art, and even more song information iirc. I imagine there is also a speed increase because the library is indexed rather than a tree of directories and music files, but don't quote me on that because I could be completely wrong.

Regardless, some people hate iTunes. It's all about personal taste, and AT&T thinks theirs and Apple's taste is better. Like a business would.

Nice of them to insert random value judgments.

Honestly, I don't see anything on there that isn't true. I don't get what the big deal is. Companies do this all the time, and this one is rather tame.

I have to agree. I had already seen the document in question and when I saw "bashes" in the headline I was hoping it wasn't for this. It's just your standard "let's try and make some sales" comparison to the competition.
#14.2 C_Guy on 24 Apr 2009 - 14:34
Yes, I've seen worse. But if the "mighty" iPhone is as good as AT&T wants us all to believe then it would be selling itself without the need for such a biased little table. AT&T wouldn't find a need to do this unless it was scared of the competition.
#14.3 +Ironman273 on 24 Apr 2009 - 14:39
There's no doubt that the Pre is shaping up to be a great product. It would be foolish of Apple or AT&T to ignore that people may consider between 2 great possibilities and try to sell their own product if asked. The spin you're trying to put on it is just childish.

But I guess when other companies make ads bashing Apple (Microsoft for example), it's good that they're standing up to 'the man'?

Apple sells purely through marketing. All companies do. There are great phones on the market that would easily trump the iPhone, but they don't have the marketing power that Apple does. Those phones don't 'sell themselves'.

Wait the iphone 3g is metal? O_o

This is what Apple does. It degrades the compitition. The palm pre must be a decent phone if Apple (ATT) feels the need to trash it. I'm on the hit list to get it on release. I would never have an apple product becuse of their constant bashing. If there products were as god as they claimed then they would sell themselves.

Bad Apple (ATT)....

I'm a happy Blackberry Storm user (on Verizon) but really miss my Treo sometimes, but I absolutely need quad-band capabilities. It's a shame they aren't shipping the first models with this yet. As far as the this memo, it's business as usual in the silicon kingdom. The Pre is very interesting to me, except for the facts previously mentioned, and the choice of carriers I think alot of people are interested in the Pre because it'll be the top of the line smart phone for Sprint (in the U.S., where I am.) AT&T has the iPhone, Verizon has the Storm, T-Mobile the Android, and now Sprint has the Pre. I'm sure AT&T came up with a "flaws report" for the the Storm (easy to do, IMO) as well as the Android phone.
What I would really like to see are the reports that the other carriers have as sales tools to use against the iPhone.

No it does not. No one begs for questions. People raise questions. People can beg for answers. Beg the question does not mean the same as raise the question.

They forgot to mention the Pre smells like plastic. And the iPhone doesnt.
