New York goes 3-D with Google

The city of New York and Google have partnered up to create a 3-D map using Google Maps API to create a virtual tour of the destination points of where you would like to travel in the city's five boroughs. The maps are displayed using a custom made table, similar to Microsoft Surface, in a fully interactive touch screen that can add venues to your planned route of New York.

The city will be available in the five boroughs in 3-D, with locations such as hotels, restaurants and entertainment, with the addition of promotions and savings in selected places. You can print the details or send the details of locations to your email or mobile phone on either, Blackberry, T-Mobile's G1, iPhone or any Windows Mobile device. With Google Maps, view walking or driving directions to your venue of choice, with a list of places in the area to visit and see, which also includes Google Street View of the locations.

The locations to view New York City tours Information Center is at 810 Seventh Avenue between 52nd and 53rd street, where the real 3-D display of the city is at. Small "puck" like discs are available with imbedded information on them that display all the information once placed onto the surface of the table, giving you a 3-D view and information.

Is that video a joke? 2:08 and the only mention of this 3D New York is from 1:50-2:00, while the only video feed of it, while blurry and far away at that, is 1:55-2:00... This video has nothing to do with the article.

The video shows off the location, the surface table (not microsoft surface), and the functionality of the web site + shows a bit of the 3D tour. There wasn't any video of a full 3-D view of new york, and that video was related to the story, that's why I posted it.

3d new york ... 5 boroughs.... reminds me of Grand Theft Auto for some reason....

but i thought the whole point of doing it in 3d was so we didnt actually have to be there to see it.... why cant this be available over the internet?

Wow, Google finally catches up what Live Search Maps has already done. I've seen 3D cities already in Live Search Maps, and it's also viewable on mobile devices. Of course, Google will get the praise for copying something MS has done.

I wonder how much Google paid the tourism board...
