Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14".There has been little to no information on the upcoming Office version and many have speculated we might not see the product until 2010. Microsoft failed to provide any solid information at last years PDC, choosing to focus on its Office Live offerings.
Eagled eyed Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear:
In the roadmap you can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009. Could this mean we'll be seeing a new edition of Office this year?

I mean open Microsoft Office and start a Word Processing Doccument, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Database (or whatever), and the revelant toolbars/menus are displayed. There is no reason to have 10 (or so) applications sold as Office products.
Hell I even mentioned this "idea" at a Microsoft UK open-day back in 2002, when I got sick of the speaker reading out a "vast" list of Office products.
But hey no-one listens to me...

Other than code optimizations, what can they possibly add to yet another version of Office?
Also Microsoft does sometimes release products right at the end of the year without naming them for the next year. e.g. Visual Studio 2005 was released in November 2005.
Obviously they will still primarily be sold and marketed as Office XXXX

Yep, sure was. I found it silly both MS and Symantec did that, but each to their own I guess.

Except for Excel I agree with you. Excel, even with SP1 is still nowhere need the speed of the 2003 version when doing complex charting (3000+ data points)
A lot of Word features broke in 2007. My boss likes to group pictures with their captions in a particular way, and I have to go to a computer with Office 2003 in order to make changes to them. I can't do crap in Word 2007 because the features do not exist. I want a downgrade
Office 95 came in 95.
Office 97 came in 97.
Office 2000 came in 1999.
Office XP came in 2001.
Office 2003 came in 2003.
Office 2007 came in 2006.
If Office 14 arrives by the end of the year it will have left a big enough gap. I personally think it'll end up being released at the end of the year branded as 2010
