Office 14 to be named Microsoft Office System 2009?

Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14".

There has been little to no information on the upcoming Office version and many have speculated we might not see the product until 2010. Microsoft failed to provide any solid information at last years PDC, choosing to focus on its Office Live offerings.

Eagled eyed Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear:

In the roadmap you can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009. Could this mean we'll be seeing a new edition of Office this year?

They just love making it longer. Office 2009 is what everybody will call it anyway.

Yeah, and every program in it will have "Microsoft Office System" tacked on to the beginning of it!!
Microsoft Office System Word
Microsoft Office System Excel
Microsoft Office System Access

What an annoyance!! Especially when they use the same nomenclature for the file formats (e.g. "Microsoft Office System Word Document")

When will Microsoft make Office ONE program?

I mean open Microsoft Office and start a Word Processing Doccument, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Database (or whatever), and the revelant toolbars/menus are displayed. There is no reason to have 10 (or so) applications sold as Office products.

Hell I even mentioned this "idea" at a Microsoft UK open-day back in 2002, when I got sick of the speaker reading out a "vast" list of Office products.
But hey no-one listens to me...

LOL.

Other than code optimizations, what can they possibly add to yet another version of Office?

Wouldn't surprise me if internally at least they were attempting to have this ready to launch simultaneously with Windows 7. If the product ships near the end of the year likewise I wouldn't be shocked if it instead gets called Office 2010 instead of 2009.
#2.1 BigCheese on 07 Jan 2009 - 11:43
I wouldn't be so sure of them changing it to Office 2010. Microsoft seems to like using the odd years for the Windows versions of office (2003, 2007 etc.) and the even years for the mac versions (2004, 200.

Also Microsoft does sometimes release products right at the end of the year without naming them for the next year. e.g. Visual Studio 2005 was released in November 2005.

Which is different from other companies that may release their... say "2009" product in 2008.
#3 theyarecomingforyou on 07 Jan 2009 - 12:16
So it shortens down to Microsoft OS 2009? And no-one thought: "hey, isn't 'OS' already used as an abbreviation for 'operating system?" Muppets.
#4 +Smigit on 07 Jan 2009 - 12:26
I was sure I'd heard Office called "Office System" in the past before and lo and behold heres some references to the phase on MS's site in regards to 2007: here and Here

Obviously they will still primarily be sold and marketed as Office XXXX

yeah, i'm pretty sure i remember at least 2003 being called office system..

anyway... wasnt office 2007 version 12? what happened to office 13?
#5.1 flash_flicker on 07 Jan 2009 - 14:12
triskaidekaphobia.....FEAR of number "13".....thats what Microsoft is apparently suffering from....
#5.2 IceBreakerG on 07 Jan 2009 - 14:29
They skipped calling the next version of Office, Office 13 for superstitious reasons, from what I heard. The number 13 isn't very lucky lol.

Yep, sure was. I found it silly both MS and Symantec did that, but each to their own I guess.
#5.7 lexa000 on 08 Jan 2009 - 03:29
I would have thought that Office:mac 2008 was Office 13.
(5 replies) #6 bradsday on 07 Jan 2009 - 15:15
Microsoft spends too much time worrying about inane issues like this, and not enough time on improving their products. Of course nobody wants to add the word "System" to Microsoft Office, but these executives have to justify their excessive salaries some how.

Except for Excel I agree with you. Excel, even with SP1 is still nowhere need the speed of the 2003 version when doing complex charting (3000+ data points)

A lot of Word features broke in 2007. My boss likes to group pictures with their captions in a particular way, and I have to go to a computer with Office 2003 in order to make changes to them. I can't do crap in Word 2007 because the features do not exist. I want a downgrade .

Does Office normally get updated like this? It almost feels too fast..

Office 95 came in 95.
Office 97 came in 97.
Office 2000 came in 1999.
Office XP came in 2001.
Office 2003 came in 2003.
Office 2007 came in 2006.

If Office 14 arrives by the end of the year it will have left a big enough gap. I personally think it'll end up being released at the end of the year branded as 2010

heeeeey... WTF HAPPENED TO 13?!

#9 qdave on 15 Jan 2009 - 18:07
