Security company AVG is upgrading a component of its antivirus software so as not to place an undue traffic load on the Web sites it scans. The company has already released a patch for LinkScanner, part of its Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0, and will release a patch for the paid versions of the software on Tuesday, said Lloyd Borrett, marketing manager for AVG in Australia and New Zealand.

The behavior of AVG's LinkScanner caused much animosity toward the Czech-based company, including a Web site dedicated to the issue, despite the popularity of its free security software. Web site owners complained LinkScanner was hitting their sites repeatedly, using up the bandwidth they paid for and causing their Web analytics programs to suddenly record high numbers of visitors. AVG acquired LinkScanner's maker, Exploit Prevention Labs, in December 2007.

Oh. And I moved on to Linux more than 5 years ago. Both stories are utterly fascinating, are they not? But neither deals with the article.

As for AVG, they let this problem go on since December of last year? Nice that they fixed it, but you think that a quick update to the link scan timings could have been done much sooner.

I'm disappointed with AVG 8.0. It seems to use the processor rather heavily when the computer boots up. I have a Pentium M 2.0 GHz and it's pegged at a solid 100% for the first 5 mintues. Makes DVDs unwatchable. My others are dual-cores, so it's not so bad, around 30%, but still, what the hell is it doing? And the SafeSearch for FireFox, when did it ask me to install that? Very sad.

I'm also getting tired of the constant asking of restarts. I just ignore it from now on.

Which process is getting run at 100% on boot? Is it an svchost.exe? Only ask as I've recently noticed my computer running an svchost.exe at full speed for a good 5-10 minutes and I've been wondering what is causing it.

I've been replacing AVG with avast on all machines I maintain, in part because of this very issue.

I've been using AVG 8.0 since release, and I have never encountered any issues with system performance or website "hammering." I also can't relate to those poor folks that are nagged with constant restarts. The Update Manager module is ****ty though, so I guess I'll give the haters that much to chew on.

If you check TweakGuides.com's forums, the owner posted a mini guide about configuring AVG 8 to improve performance. Hopefully that will be enough to convince the "switchers" to give it another try.

Prior to this update you could actually install AVG Free without LinkScanner by following these steps. Then, if you do manage your own website, a simple modification to your htaccess file will direct all the bogus LinkScanner traffic back to the AVG website.

They release the update to the free version before paying customers? I guess they are working on the majority, whom are free edition users.

I wish they'd get rid of the [!] icon in the systray that appears if you disable even one feature.

Just right click on the feature you disabled and select the "Ignore component state"

I am glad they fixed that as I have to set up a relative's Windows machine and they need free antivirus and AVG gets good marks from many people, except for this issue which they have now fixed.

Users of AVG should be concerned about this graph:

Why? That graph comes directly from ESET's website (http://www.eset.com/products/compare-NOD32-vs-competition.php). It's hardly a non-biased opinion.
