Google has taken a dig at Apple's iPhone, saying the device has a much smaller market than phones which run Android, the mobile phone operating system Google helped develop.

The search giant said that despite selling 4 million units within the first 7 months of its release, the iPhone was ultimately a more limited device than phones which ran on the Google-backed platform, because the potential for developers to build new applications using Android was greater.

Rich Miner, group manager for mobile platforms at Google, was quoted by IT Week as saying: "Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone."

Mr Miner told a conference in Silicon Valley that whereas the iPhone had "a single manufacturer" and was "targeted at a particular demographic", developers could expect a much wider uptake of applications they developed for Android-based phones, the first of which are expected to be released later this year.

Maybe so, but I doubt the interface will ever be as slick and polished as the iPhone.

Right. Because nothing will EVER be as good as the iPhone.

as a much smaller market than phones which run Android,

Are any phones running Android?

Hopefully Android will do ok, and also Windows Mobile will, and Palm and RIM, symbian, etc

Domination by one system is never good for the consumer

It would be 0.6% I think, because 10m. units would be 1% and for now Apple should have sold 6-7mln of iPhones.

Google thinks their mobile phone platform will be better than a competitor's?

Shocking.

This is no different than the Apple/MS battles. Google is only making the OS, so if it's even slightly successful of course it will have the larger market. They're comparing apples/oranges. Make an actual phone if you want a true comparison.

Now we get to look forward to iPhone/Android battlethreads.

whatever, that BS google os just another os that's all. An open source phone os on Nokias and SE???, --I can't see that happening and even so, hardware could still be crap, but most of all, the biggest cell manufactures won't gamble on some new and open source crap. iPhone comes in a complete package--awesome os and hardware!

Nokia and SE has their own stake in Symbian, so they wont jump on this by a long shot. But there's a lot of other mobile manufacturers that'll happily adopt a FREE operating system instead of developing their own or licensing another.
HTC is just one of them and if you know anything about phones, you'll know that they make some quality stuff. There's also LG, motorola, Samsung and any number of Korean manufacturers that would like a unified OS.

The biggest problem mobile phones have today is the amount of different OS's out there. It's extremely hard developing apps for them all, at least if Google's android takes off, it'll make life a lot easier on us mobile devs.

Honestly.. Apple doesnt even care what google thinks.

See, with apples market and plan.. they obviosly know they cannot dominate, as the mobile market has a wider range of competition than when compared to the PC market. (this is in terms of OS) So far, Symbian and Windows CE are prolly the no. 1 and 2 in the mobile market.

Yes Android might have a chance, as their interface is also prity well compiled. But Apples focus is more towards the field on good looks, quality and usability. And its prity amazing how much market share they have gained with just one phone.

Andriod is just a free platform which I highly doubt will be adopted by major vendors such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Primarily due to Security reasons since the Andriod Platform is open source.

Symbian will always be No.1 in this field.. Apple will win in their own way.

ps- I find google really annoying now..
