We posted earlier this week about an unofficial set of patches being labeled as a Windows XP SP3 "Preview Pack". The pack was created by members of TheHotfix.net and included many patches not generally available to the public. Today we get word from Bink.nu that Microsoft has issued a statement in their newsgroups regarding this unofficial package:

"It is just a collection of hotfixes and other updates we have released. It will not update your Windows XP system to SP3. It also contains a number of private hotfixes that are usually only issued to users with a specific identifiable problem. The hotfixes are not as rigorously tested at public released ones this is why we ask you to call PSS to get them so we can track you and provide further assistance such as new versions of the fixes etc as they become available.

Just installing all the "privates" on your PC may make you machine LESS stable and will also put you out of support from Microsoft or an OEM as you are installing incorrectly issued private hotfixes. Frankly this "package" should be avoid and you should continue to use Windows Update and the download site to get the most up-to-date and correctly issued Microsoft fixes and patches."

Update: Ethan Allen, administrator of TheHotfix has responded to Microsoft's comment:

"Our pack is indeed a preview to what the official service pack will be, as these hotfixes will be in Service Pack 3 as proven by Microsoft's own knowledge base. Searching the keywords "kbwinxppresp3fix" and "kbwinxpsp3fix" at http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 will provide you an exact list of what we give out, nothing more, nothing less. Each of these hotfixes can be obtained for free from Microsoft by calling their support lines."

TheHotfix writes:

"The Hotfix does agree with Microsoft that the "Windows XP Service Pack 3" is indeed
just a collection of hotfixes and not any official SP3. We have recently updated our
language on a number of pages warning users that the fixes we provide are an
unofficial pack and that only expert Windows users should install them at their own
will.

The being said, we disagree with Microsoft in terms of what SP3 is. Our pack is
indeed a preview to what the official service pack will be, as these hotfixes will
be in Service Pack 3 as proven by Microsoft's own knowledge base. Searching the
keywords "kbwinxppresp3fix" and "kbwinxpsp3fix" at
http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 will provide you an exact list of what we
give out, nothing more, nothing less. Each of these hotfixes can be obtained for
free from Microsoft by calling their support lines.

Will these hotfixes make your machine less stable? Yes, there is that possibility.
Is that at the fault of The Hotfix? No. Regardless of which site these may have come
from, they were created by Microsoft.

If you are a normal user, avoid the package. But if you're a Windows enthusiast,
like the type of people who are website caters to, then give it a shot at your own
will. Who knows, maybe it will actually fix a bug in Windows XP that should have
never been there in the first place."

#1.1 Mr. Dee on 09 Oct 2005 - 00:39
Who in their right mind would really even think about installing this unknown crap in the first place?
#2 Ely on 08 Oct 2005 - 23:26
I said it when I saw it and I say it again now, you must be out of your mind to actually download and install all those things on your PC as they have never been officially released by Microsoft, and are not even supposed to be all installed, this is a collection of private fixes, Only a few people will need them.

I was only looking for one specific patch, the KB893056 one, to add a hibernate button to the "Turn Off" screen. Works great.
#3.1 LtData on 09 Oct 2005 - 13:49
If you have a "Stand By" button on the "Turn Off" screen, holding Shift will change it into a "Hibernate" button.
#4 Pliskin on 08 Oct 2005 - 23:38
I bet you a lot of n00bs downloaded this and installed it blindly. Just check their forums.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I didn't install it, I'm just a drama whore

Though its incorrect to label the list of patches as SP3.
I do like the fact that all the patches are listed at one location.

Users should pick and choose what they need instead of installing everything.
Same goes for latest non-WHQL video drivers.
Install updated drivers only if you have problem or you risk making your system unstable.

Allen said last Wednesday that he got these "updates" from an internal Microsoft source... Now, in his official response he says "Each of these hotfixes can be obtained for free from Microsoft by calling their support line"...

WTF? Sounds like he's trying to save face and spin it the best he can...
#9.2 wa22guy on 09 Oct 2005 - 07:17
Yes, I did get them from a source within Microsoft but notice I said that "Each of these hotfixes can be obtained for free"... meaning customers can get them for free anyway, not just from The Hotfix. I don't see how this is considered spin.

The people that run thehotfix.net are nothing but amateurs and total idiots - read their comment and look at the statement on their own website - someone should tell them about the wonderful SPELL-CHECKER in Microsoft Word.

These nut-cases took a bunch of patches that were NOT intended for the general public and slammed them into what they advertized as "SP3" - and got rightly smacked by Microsoft.

One word sums it up: INCREDULOUS!

While a bit crude, I do agree that I have never trusted them one bit.

Agreed

I think is should not be called SP3 in anyway that may confuse some users
#12.1 thenay on 10 Oct 2005 - 11:00
Yea I agree, or atleast call it the "Non-Official MS XP SP3 Preview Pack"
#13 macstorm on 09 Oct 2005 - 18:29
only morons install packs and sensible system files from sites other than M$
#14 MtDewCodeRedFreak on 09 Oct 2005 - 18:44
Anyone remember the Windows 98 SE "Unofficial SP 2.0" that was created by "Gape"?

My point, exactly.
#15 aristotle-dude on 09 Oct 2005 - 19:57
With all the trouble the "official" SP2 caused people with the initial public release of it, I would think you people would have learned your lesson not to install this kind of stuff.
#16 SpyCatcher on 10 Oct 2005 - 02:58
I downloaded and installed pre-SP3... I have had NO problems or issues. I would not recommend installing SP3 if you are casual XP user if you are a expert you will have zero problems.
#17 jstillion on 10 Oct 2005 - 15:26
One thing I wonder is if there checking to see is hotfix a for example, gets replaced with latter hotfix c. It's nice to get access to all those hotfixes and do selective install but for people wanting to do an all in one, I would use Ryan's VM Post sp2 pack, he seems to take great care in how he bundles it and his site seem far more professional, espically the forums then Hotfix. All the f bombs about IE 7 not being with sp3 for example leaves a good impressions at the hotfix.... http://ryanvm.msfn.org/

'SP3 Preview Pack' IS INCOMPLETE!!!!

it cannot have WGA or need to made a "free" call to MS.

#19 Antiprophet on 11 Oct 2005 - 00:43
i was about to reinstall with nLite, so i thought i would give it a try, and microsoft are right here.

Firefox became unbareable. Images not loading at random, sluggish etc.
boot times of over 2 mins, after several boots etc etc.

Steer clear, unless you are looking for one or two specific patches that you know you need.
Vivá nLite.

Calling it "XP SP3 Unofficial" would have prevented a lot of headaches for newbies. They're purposely misrepresenting their software - they require you to join their forum before you can download.
#21 SpyCatcher on 11 Oct 2005 - 17:58
I can't resist... "kronix2" you're a retard, you had to join this forum also....
