New York City is preparing to go fully wireless by January, 2005. The deal is currently being finalized between New York City authorities and six technology companies. To strengthen coverage and signal, 18,000 new lamp post-based antennas will be installed virtually everywhere in the five burroughs that make up New York City.

The plan has already come under fire by local officials concerned what the new antennas will do to people's health, now and in the long run. Local activist John Campos of Queens, NY, says, "Within where I live, over a mile radius, there are over 300 antennas already," said Mr Campos, pointing at a cluster of small masts on a rooftop across the street. "What happens if in 20 years, there's even a minor adverse reaction to human beings?"

Peter Vallone Jr is a Queens council member and chairman of the city's safety committee who also shares Mr. Campos's concerns. "The city was in the papers when I first came out against this, saying there's less radiation than from a microwave (oven) from these antennas, and that may be true," said councilman Vallone. "But nobody runs a microwave 24 hours a day, seven days a week, outside their bedroom door when they are sleeping. That's why it's important we study this," he added.

Commissioner Menchini addresses these concerns by stating, "We've had industry experts come in and advise us on this and everything I've heard, from our health commissioner to the industry experts, says there's no health risk associated with these antennas and these devices."

Hehe.. finally, Big Apple is catching up

Though the benefits are clear. I would also be worried if I lived in that area about prolonged radiation as the councilman said.
#2.1 Huezo on 22 Aug 2004 - 18:35
I'd be concerned about the radiation too.
#2.2 Grappa on 23 Aug 2004 - 13:25
I think it's ironic that these people are concerned about this radiation, when breathing the air in NYC is like smoking a pack a day.

QUOTE
I'd be concerned about the radiation too.

"Radiation" is a loaded word: just because some object or device is a source of "radiation" doesn't necessarily make it harmful. Every time you turn on a light, you're literally bathing yourself in "radiation".

The kind of radiation one should be worried about is "ionizing" radiation, i.e., radiation energetic enough to start stripping electrons from any tissue that it passes through. Ionizing radiation such as x-rays can alter the chemical and genetic characteristics of cellular structures, causing mutations that can lead to diseases such as cancer. Non-ionizing radiation sources such as radio frequency transmitters have no such effect.

We already live in a sea of low-energy radiation. Throwing one more source into the mix wouldn't likely have any discernable effect on one's health and well-being.

There are a lot more dangerous things in the world to be worried about. If I were you, I'd be more worried about living downwind from New Jersey than I would be about a few Wi-Fi antennas!

There is gonna be a subscription fee right? If we only had this in Vancouver.

nice, real nice, so does that mean the folks living there get free internet access
I thought Seattle was 100% wireless, but I guess its not
#4.1 absolutemaxpayne.co.uk on 22 Aug 2004 - 23:32
Yeah, is this service free? What speeds will it run at?
#5 Xabora on 22 Aug 2004 - 18:19
Now I wanna take my Laptop there.

From the article:

There is already one patch of midtown Manhattan that provides an ideal glimpse of what a more wireless-friendly New York will be like.

Bryant Park has been providing a free service to any laptop user who wants access for many months now.

People come from all over the city to log-on and work in the sunshine, and naturally, everyone I spoke to welcomed the idea of extending this kind of coverage.
#6.1 Grappa on 23 Aug 2004 - 13:27
... sounds like a great place to run Ethereal.
#6.2 D144 on 23 Aug 2004 - 15:00
I've used the Bryant Park wireless network all summer and its great.

Except for the mosquitos

hmmmm, prolonged exposure to RF waves could have harmful longterm affects on humans.... Well then I guess it's time to close down radio stations and stop using our cordless phones. Someone should tell those "activitsts" its their cell phones they should be worried about. Radio waves bad, holding a microwave to your ear, good. lol
#7.1 Vlad on 23 Aug 2004 - 02:31
Heh, true, but one of the keypoints is that there are far greater sources of radiation people should be worried about other than their cell phones/wireless access points.

Here's a great tip for everyone afraid of radiation: Don't freaking cook yourselves in it at the beach. UV light is thousands/millions/billions of times more energetic than RF light.

w00txorz !!! I'm in NYC and im thinking of buying a laptop. This rocks!
#9 JoHideo on 22 Aug 2004 - 19:31
I don't understand this fear... this radiation is at such a frequency that it isn't really possible to do any damage. Why not fear infrared then? That's being given off all around us all the time and is higher frequency.

my college is in uptown manhatan and I get free verizon hotspot access since i have verizon DSL. where I live if I scan with the software I got with my wireless card I could easily get 5-10 wireless SSID ( from other ppls router) and can connect to almost allmost all of them (talk about wireless security).

The article is unclear if they just mean cellphone coverage or actual citywide WiFi. The Bryant Park example suggests the latter, but the rest of the piece seems to emphasize cellular service. No mention of fees, either. If the "six companies" are each paying the city $25M/year for the right to install antennae, it's unlikely service will be free! Not very good journalism, IMHO.

I tried to find a hotspot on Staten Island when I was there last Fall, but there was bupkis, nada.
#11.1 WishX on 22 Aug 2004 - 20:38
I think the whole idea is about putting up repeaters and antennas all over for more coverage. I assume they can be for any given wireless signal.

You're right though... it was kind of a weird article.

I'd be scared of the radiation effect
#12.1 epple on 23 Aug 2004 - 14:50
Don't go out in the sun then.
#12.2 dandin1 on 23 Aug 2004 - 15:34
In fact, your lights radiate energy too :p Even you're computer screen!
(1 reply) #13 pdog on 22 Aug 2004 - 21:12
stupid politicians, they should just wait 6 months and put up at the most two WiMAX towers and blanket the whole city, not waste money with old technology!
#13.1 Fowen on 23 Aug 2004 - 02:38
and then if they wait, in six more months they will announce that there will be new technology that these WiMax towers will be twice effective and cover more ground per tower.... should they wait then?

I get headaches and sore throats from my wireless setup. I keep it unplugged most of the time because of that. I'm not kidding either.
#14.1 Dayon on 23 Aug 2004 - 00:39
In all probability it's your own fear of it that causes any symptoms. A wireless connection doesn't cause sore throats.
#15 Fredde87 on 22 Aug 2004 - 23:15
come on.. its a bs that it is a health factor... you would have felt the same way without it ^^

you might want to stay away from FM and AM broadcasting aswell if you think that wireless is a health problem.. its all bs, everybody is so scared for such ridicilous things...
#16 rocks1985 on 22 Aug 2004 - 23:35
if its wifi, this is pretty futuristic
#17 BananaMan on 23 Aug 2004 - 01:31
Sounds like a cool idea, but I imagine there will be some backlash if and when it goes live as I'm sure there's a few monkeys out there in NY who decided it was a good idea to broadcast their unprotected network administrate shares, which will of course be taken advantage of by the tech savvy.
#18 Fowen on 23 Aug 2004 - 02:39
What will all the hi speed internet companies do?
#19 jivemastert on 23 Aug 2004 - 06:00
blah, i have my wireless router on all the time, non stop, 24 hours a day. it aint hurt me yet. it done noo brain damage to me, yes sir.
#20 nexx on 23 Aug 2004 - 09:30
oph noes, not radio waves!

The car pollution is going to more damage but we dont hear anybody complaining about that

Funny thing to see someone giving an evil eye to everyone who has a laptop like himself just because his internets lagging. "St00pid f00! You slowin' down the server!!!"

#23 The Napster on 23 Aug 2004 - 15:53
My Mom would say: "OMG more radiation waves. were never going to the US again" Thats about what she said when we got our wireless router, luckily she believes my dad

hhmmmm, a wireless network in NY. Comeon lets all book some tikets and play UT2004 24/7 down there
#24 noll3095 on 23 Aug 2004 - 16:29
Just need one person to jack up the wattage and microwave New York...

#25 indiedude on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:02
Hmm, it doesn't realy matter whether it's free or not does it? if there was a fee, wouldn't you just cancell your current ISP and then just sign up for this? seeing as you should be able to access it anywhere in New York.

The radiation thing is fairly stupid, the same paranoia sprung up when cellphones were first brought out but now nearly everyone has one.
#26 Magallanes on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:40
indiedude you are right!, cellpone cannot generate radiation, everyone must be worried in buy, buy and buy cells phone, of course in the future, many of this users will suffer some kind of cancer or brain problems but not worry in the future, they will find the cure about it.
#27 brundlefry on 23 Aug 2004 - 18:12
OMGWTF AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

/it's not a tum-ah
#28 rogerroger on 23 Aug 2004 - 18:17
Who cares, it is only New York. We got plenty of other large cities with bad cab drivers!
#29 SimplyPotatoes on 23 Aug 2004 - 21:22
lol they live in new york and are worried about antenna's! what about the damn air quality, every single time i have been to new york, i have gotten a small cold or virus w/e. i hate that damn city.
#30 Chugworth on 24 Aug 2004 - 02:53
If it's free and run by the government, don't complain when they start monitoring your communication on it.
#31 supagold on 24 Aug 2004 - 04:20
Don't worry, if people start getting cancer, the government can just hand out crystals to cure everyone.
