Microsoft certainly is one company not feeling the economic downturn at the moment. During the biggest shopping weekend of the year, they pulled out a huge victory in the shops, and over Sony's rival PlayStation 3 system. In a recent press release, figures show that the Xbox 360 outsold PlayStation 3 consoles three-to-one, and estimates a 25% increase on sales of the console from last years Black Friday. To top this off, the Xbox 360 also continues to have the highest attach rate of any current generation console, with a rate of 8.1 games per console.
Whilst signs are good in the USA, it's not geographically exclusive. Xbox sales have seen a 400% rise in some Euro zone countries, and since the September price drop, have been consistently outselling the PS3 week on week.
With some analysts claiming this festive period is make or break for the PS3, the signs are not good for Sony. Microsoft on the other hand, it seems, keep making the right decisions where it matters.

The console competition is now better, because there is this new comer who shows Nintendo and Sony how to listen to what customers want and deliver very useful software updates and services.
IMO since the console is now under 300 the sales have just gone upwards... I work in retail and we sell all of our 360 consoles every delivery... PS3 takes a few months to sell 12-24 units...
360 is on the right track
They didn't missing anything, they just didn't mention it because the Wii is so far ahead it's pathetic. They also sold out before Black Friday in most places I bet.
If only Xbox Live is available in our country, I'd get the Xbox 360. The added value of this console is in its online aspects and excellent software.
I agree, the people I know that have them rarely ever use it.
No.. just because you have done so doesn't mean that 'many' have.
Do you have some sort of proof that more people than just you have done this?

Actually, I know a guy who bought 3 diff Xbox360s, 1 basic, 1 elite, and 1 premium. I asked him why, but he didnt have an answer.....IMO he should have just bought a HDD and wireless controls
You can check if it's Jasper by the power rating (150W Jasper , 175W - Falcon) on the power source unit, and/or on the console (12.1A instead of 14~something W).
Money spent on an X-box (however dubious the build quality) is an extremely cheap form of entertainment, and a distraction for children, now that the quality of television output is so low (and corrupting).
Compare games consoles in the early 21st century to Cinema / Movies in the depression period of the 1930's. It all make sence.
Yes, it's been reported that they made profit last quarter iirc.
if it wasn't the fact that discounting their consoles most of their products have significantly gone downhill over the years and lost out to cheaper alternatives its hardly a surprise.
And even then, looking at the 360's attached rate at 8.1 per unit, that kinda kills your idea, because people are actually buy games still.
Oh, there is that whole banning of modded consoles also, MS seems to be pretty good at doing that more and more.

Take the original xbox. With each release Microsoft made it seemingly easier and easier to fit mod chips and at the peak before the 360 launch having a modded xbox seemed to be what everyone did because of all the amazing stuff it could do.
Sony really dropped the ball, they're not planning a price cut until april -- way after the major shopping season. I'll be very suprised if their numbers don't drop off a cliff comparitivly.
