How far will you go for an MMORPG? A group of MMORPG gamers played for 18 hours straight just to try and kill one boss-mob. Tried, because they failed to do so -- an 18 hour, non-stop, effort gone to waste. Final Fantasy XI's Pandemonium Warden was the mob in question. The boss of this mob goes through some 20 different forms, some of which regen to 100% health, each of which spawns along with minion monsters.

"...After you kill all of the above [20 forms of the boss] he will pop with "hatched" lamps -- smaller chair dudes", posted Sylphet, chronicling their experience in frustration. "We killed all of the Lamps and at 75% he popped another 8 and regened to 100%. We attempted again but the lamps were faster this time and we wiped after killing just one." The group started playing at 3:30 pm EST, U.S, and finally ended at 9:00 AM the next morning: "People were passing out and getting physically ill," Sylphet continued. "We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible new story about how video games ruin people's lives."

True.

I gave WoW a fair chance, about 2 weeks play hour or two a day, and it did not grip me. Not in the slightest.

Command and Conquer, now thats a different story!

Wow! I've been laughing so hard I couldn't type for the last couple minutes!

18 hours?! And they lost!? HAHAHA!

Seriously though, what developer designs such a boss encounter? Or was it not supposed to be that long, the players were just doing it wrong?

Monsters are not actually meant to last this long, but they can tag it for a friggin long time...

It's a new mob, ppl are still figuring out the strategy. Most ppl give up sooner if things go wrong and rethink their aproach, and try it differently the next time. Others... don't... and this is the result. Rant at not being able to do it.

Dear Lord, I was confused as to how my friend could spend up to an hour killing the bosses in WoW...but 18 hours? This is why I don't play MMO's :p Faaaaar too time consuming.

The phrase "EPIC FAIL" will never be the same.

I think the money quote's a little late, considering they wasted all that time and lost.
#13 nonick on 19 Aug 2008 - 21:16

How's that possible? People playing a game for 18 hours straight have no lives.
#15.1 Albert on 20 Aug 2008 - 03:04
actually, i don't mind seeing all of them gone kaput ... just for the betterment of the overall human gene pool.

darwin award, anyone?
#15.2 FusionOpz on 20 Aug 2008 - 11:15
I wish that would happen to WoW players too :/ the world would be a better place without MMO's

Thought FF games were all about spending hours watching big-eyed anime characters stand around crying in overblown cinematics..?

LMAO...
#17.2 The Dark Wanderer on 20 Aug 2008 - 17:21
Yeah but they had to kill the boss first to watch it
#18 ozulus on 20 Aug 2008 - 08:45
They are just dumb. All they needed to do is /logout if they were tired. Getting physically ill because you can't shutdown your console/pc? Because you can't kill a mob? So from now on if you can't kill a mob just blame it on SE.

Also, it's a new mob, ppl don't know the strategy to kill it, it will take a while until it's figured out, it's also possible SE didn't predict it to be so hard and on next patch it will be fixed. I hardly doubt it takes more than 1 hour to kill in a few months, just like other mobs, with exception of AV which still there isn't a strategy.

I remember my FFXI days. Started playing in beta and then went on for almsot 3 years. Playing day and night, night and day...lol. AHH those were the days and i did have a lot of fun.

Could i see myself fighting for 18 hours? hmmm maybe who knows. I better have a lot of RED BULL on hand though lol.

I give them props though. They fought hard and that in itself deserves reconition.

them playing so much has nothing to do because its an MMO. the world record is like 2 days playing RB6 vegas 2. and thats a FPS.

But did they take breaks in between? You can't take breaks in the middle of a non-stop boss battle.

SquareEnix just announced that they are going to be making this boss easier in the next patch.

The past two weeks have seen considerable feedback from players regarding the amount of time required to combat the Pandemonium Warden, a recently implemented Notorious Monster (NM). Discussion has spread significantly throughout forums, and it has become apparent that this is indeed an issue of major unrest in the community.

We would like to assure players that the development and management teams place a high value on their feedback, and the issue has since been taken under serious consideration. Together with Absolute Virtue, it has been deemed that the combative techniques for weakening these NMs are too difficult. As a result, some players have engaged these enemies using unanticipated methods which led to extended battle times. It is by no means the desire of the development team to see players involved in encounters that require an excessive amount of time and effort to complete. It was for this reason that previous measures were put into practice which prohibited NMs from being held in battle for prolonged periods. In response to these events, we have determined that further alterations are required to prevent such battles from exceeding a certain predetermined length of time.

Included in the version update scheduled for early September will be modifications to the degree of difficulty of Pandemonium Warden (and associated pets), Absolute Virtue (and associated pets), and Jailer of Love. The aim of these changes is to create battles where a decisive outcome may be reached within a shorter period of time.

The development and management teams would like to take this opportunity to express their commitment to a healthy and wholesome game environment for players everywhere to enjoy, and to thank them for the continued feedback.
