The next video game console from Japan's Nintendo Co. Ltd. will be ready for wireless Internet gaming and be backwards-compatible with the current generation GameCube, the company said on Thursday. Nintendo also said it will launch a subscription-free Internet gaming service for its new DS dual-screen hand held gaming device this year.

Nintendo's first game for that service will be a version of the hit "Animal Crossing." The DS is Nintendo's latest hand held while the new console, code-named "Revolution," has not been launched, and Nintendo declined to provide a date. The console will be powered by a chip developed by IBM code-named "Broadway" and a graphics processor from ATI Technologies Inc. code-named "Hollywood."

If Nintendo were to make online free with it's new console and backwards compatible, not only will it keep the gamecube customer base, but everyone who plays online will definately be jumping on the bandwagon if sony and microsoft don't respond in kind. I know if N4S or Soul Calibur or whatever is multiplay and available for all three platforms I will play the free one online. It's the reason I play games like BF1942, CS, Starcraft etc. games like planetside and such would be fun to go to once in awhile, but I can't justify paying a monthly subscription for it.

And don't give me the you pay for internet monthly. I pay for internet because I can watch tv shows, go to news sites (ala neowin), listen to music, connect to my pc from work or other pcs when I need access to it, as well as several other things involving personal work. Gaming only makes up maybe 5 - 15 % of the time I'm on my computer. That means around $3 of my $30 internet money is going towards playing games online. A game like WoW would more than triple that expense - no dice from me.

The console online service is free also: GameIndustry.bz.

The wireless online service for the console will use a common interface and API for both WiFi and LAN play, he said, so that it will feel the same for consumers to use either service, while the "most important consumer barrier" will be removed by making the service free.

The reasoning: Hollywood is the capital of movie entertainment, Boardway the capital of theatre. They want Revolution to be the capital of gaming entertainment. At least, that the PR behind what the names are :p

This article really barely touches on the fact that DS will be online this year. If you aren't paying attention you can easily miss it.

I don't know...

I don't see how they're going to compete with the features of Xbox Live in a free service. But I'll guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Finally Nintendo executes it's online plan . Nice bonus the Revolution will be GC compatible and now where do I pre-order?

They never said that. They said they weren't interested YET, and it wasn't profitable YET.

Now of course Xbox Live has grown, and Microsoft is making money on Xbox Live, and Live features boost game sales. Now, obviously this means they are following their competition, but for three fourths of a generation Nintendo has been right.

You haven't caught anyone in a contradiction tiger.

the xbox needs a payed subscription because of the emmense cost of running it, halo2 alone costs ALOT to record every single game ever played in detail with all stats and even pics of where you died etc.
the ranking system etc.

i honestly don't care about x-box live. I've played many online games in my time.. and none of them were fee based!

sony has a online system thats free. an when nintendo gets online. that will be free as well, i think microsoft is just bull****ting us with this fee! another free online HUGE service i can think of right now is.. Battle.net, that is huge. and its 100% free. I will admit it isn't as fancy as x-box live. but honestly who needs all that? im just the kind of guy who plays the game..

im not going to buy a $300 - $400 console then add a $100 yearly subscription service on top of it. I'd rather pay my money on games.
#7.2 threedaysdwn on 12 Mar 2005 - 20:03
Actually it's $50 a year. And many of us find it is well worth it.

I own a PS2 also. PS2 Online is a joke compared to Live. Right now, Sony just doesn't "get it." Hopefully (for them), Sony and Nintendo will figure it out before the next round.
#7.3 Dale on 13 Mar 2005 - 05:38
$50 american that is.

i'm not american and therefor its more money. Id rather have it be a joke than a pay for service though.
#7.4 werejag on 13 Mar 2005 - 23:33
Dale

halo2 costs no more than runing quake 3 arena online or another shoot me up game. microsoft is over charging.
#7.5 Dale on 13 Mar 2005 - 23:54
bah.. i give up.. say what you want. but i still refuse to pay for a online game.. and i never will.

This is a good idea as long as it is 802.11g. I wish I had wireless on my Xbox without having to buy a Linksys Game adapter.
#9.1 macrosslover on 13 Mar 2005 - 07:46
you know Micrsoft made an Xbox wireless-g adapter right?
#10 JVAGO on 13 Mar 2005 - 08:59
Oooooo....pretty news feed I like this news. Too bad they aren't teaming up with nVidia though. I would rather have nVidia codename brilliant over ATI codename paint-bucket but I guess thats okay.
(1 reply) #11 pdog on 13 Mar 2005 - 16:22
there's speculation on starting a mmorpg over at the dslinux site.
#11.1 JVAGO on 14 Mar 2005 - 07:58
I support that now that you have said it That is a completely GREAT idea. You could have all kinds of stuff. WOW! Thats totally great!
#12 randomnut on 13 Mar 2005 - 16:24
Will be spot on if it actually happens. If its free and has 802.11g support ill definatley be getting the next nintendo
#13 paulhaskew on 15 Mar 2005 - 17:07
