Ed Fries, the long-time head of Microsoft Game Studios and the man responsible for cementing industry relationships for the company's Xbox video game console, has resigned, Microsoft said Tuesday.

Fries' resignation was announced in an e-mail from Robbie Bach, senior vice president of Microsoft's games division and "Chief Xbox Officer." After 18 years with Microsoft, Bach said, Fries "has made the decision to leave the company and pursue other goals." Shane Kim, currently the chief operating officer for the game studios, will replace Fries on an interim basis until a successor can be named.

In an interview with CNN, Ed Fries gave further details behind his resignation.

"We're kind of at the point in the project that you have to decide 'are you going to sign up for another five years for the next version or not'," Fries said. "That's just the natural point to look back at it and ask 'Is this what I want to do? Is everything how I want it to be?'"

CNN revealed that the departure comes after months of discussions between Fries and Bach. Fries said the company offered to change his job responsibilities in order to convince him to stay, but the two parties could not reach an agreement.

"For me, I'm looking for a situation where I have a lot of freedom around the development of our products and the way those products come to market," he said. "I've had some of that to date, but not as much as I would like."

Because Microsoft has been selling the Xboxs with no profits, in fact they have to spend money to make the Xbox priced at the price they are at now. So how are they going to make money from the Xbox project? Well, the answer is simple, Xbox Live, cause now lotz of ppl can afford the Xbox but it's the online experince that makes it addictive.

I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't make any money on Xbox Live at all either. Their profits come from games, and Xbox Live just gives people another reason to buy them.

all consoles cost more than $200, more than $300. sony and nintendo lose money for each system sold too. the money is made in the games.

when is Halo2 coming out? he might still be around for its launch, it case you guys not aware, executives never quit in a day, especially high level ones, they aren't acme challanged bagger boys. if I recall correctly last time a major MS executive retired he remained in his position for another 2 month.

LOL!! For everyone who goes away from Microsoft, they say "he wants to pursue other goals". That's starting to sound like BS, some probably leave because they don't agree with Microsoft, they didn't get along or other crap. Pursuing other goals is BS excuse.

Considering the number of millionaires Microsoft has made (close to 1/3 of the company) leaving to "pursue other goals" is hardly surprising.

This guy has been at Microsoft for 18 years which means that he got in on the first round of stock options right after the company went public in 1986; he's probably worth several tens of millions of dollars.

No, it is a legit excuse and the Xbox is doing fine. People switch jobs all the time so it is not actually a big deal to see him leave.
#10.1 pizzadude on 14 Jan 2004 - 20:51
Right, so they're now in third place judging (just what I've heard and read, correct me if I'm wrong) by the latest charts and are making little or no money at all on the console, you call that fine?
#10.2 gameguy on 14 Jan 2004 - 20:55
read my post above. sony and nintendo lose money on their consoles as well. how much do you think it costs to design, prototype, and mass produce a PS2 or gamecube, $50? if so, you're sadly mistaken...
#10.3 EnderDX on 15 Jan 2004 - 03:35
Nintendo isn't loosing money on their console. They designed it to be cheap. They are the only company making money off of their hardware.
#10.4 SecretAgentMan on 15 Jan 2004 - 04:53
Microsoft is not close to being in third place and they had a good holiday season as well.
