Following Nintendo's first ever loss, they have announced plans to launch a new console next year but, as usual, it will be released in Japan first. Nintendo have not yet announced whether it'll be a handheld (likely) or a home console (unlikely) but we do know that it'll be shown at E3 in May. In the meantime, here's a quote regarding Nintendo's financial results:

Nintendo's group net loss totaled 2.89 billion yen ($26.6 million) in the six months ended Sept. 30. The Kyoto-based company generated profit of 19 billion yen a year ago. First-half sales rose 1.6 percent to 211.4 billion yen, the company said in a statement released through the Osaka Securities Exchange.
Nintendo today repeated its full-year net income and sales forecasts announced October. Sales are expected to total 550 billion yen and net income 60 billion yen for the 12 months ending March 31, 2004.

Nintendo also reiterated its full-year forecast of shipping 6 million GameCube video consoles, and 20 million GameBoy Advance hand-held games.

#3 Danrarbc641 on 13 Nov 2003 - 14:28
This sounds like the Halo 2 on Black Friday and Xbox 2 next year news

In other words... I wish people who have no idea what it takes to make a console or it's games would stop thinking out loud.
Wait until the thing is announced first, before then you never really have a handle of where it is in the design process..

I hope it's not a handheld. I don't think too many people would buy ANOTHER one. I can see the news now.

"Gamers now have the choices of Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, and now the Special Edition Gameboy Advance SP Super Deluxe VG FV LP. Why do you want this one? Many people complained that about the light in the first Gameboy Advance so the light has been relocated AGAIN! This time two nano-inches to the left. Scrap your old SP, the SP Super Deluxe VG FV LP is the one you want."

Unless they come out with MP3 storage or something, I'm probably not going to buy it if it's a handheld
#4.1 divertom15 on 13 Nov 2003 - 17:18
maybe they would release a new sp that makes it so you dont have to buy the DAMN head phones adapter

like sp is supposed to be the best gameboy and they leave it off
#5 Lingwo on 13 Nov 2003 - 15:37
Great another crappy addition to the gameboy world.
#6 WinterNightDream on 13 Nov 2003 - 16:29

There's no reason to have all the DVD playback components that consoles have. They're gaming systems, not home entertainment devices.

Nintendo has been around longer than any of the competition, so I seriously doubt that they will go down after a poor release date for the Gamecube. There's not much they can do about Microsoft buying out the competition either..Microsoft has to have a monopoly to have success.
#9.1 Prelude76 on 13 Nov 2003 - 17:38
no reason, eh?

well, here's one: when i go up to the cottage, i bring the PS2. why? coz there is only a TV there, so PS2 works 3 ways --- Gaming, Play Music CDs, and Play DVDs out at the cottage.

DVD drives are about the same $$ as CD drives these day, so why not give ability to play DVD movies since its already in the friggin box.

QUOTE (#9.0)

Thats a load of rubbish. They bought Rare and maybe a few tiny companies which would of gone down on their own anyway. Most companies gladly make games for them. Best hardware and setup. Thats why they are doing well. Nintendo are still stuck in the 90s.
#9.3 Bant on 13 Nov 2003 - 21:56
microsoft bought halo. which sold their console. nobody was on the microsoft bandwagon before halo started selling like craziness... and then xbox got more and more dev's.
#9.4 Jon on 14 Nov 2003 - 01:42
Arg, I totally agree with 9.0

What you're all talking about are entertainment systems, not consoles. The cube is a true console, they kept that focus. If you want your all in one wonder box, then stick with your PoS2. The real gamers know where to look for console fun.
#9.5 CrimandEvil on 14 Nov 2003 - 07:25
If I wanted an all in one solution i'd bring a laptop. Nintendo makes CONSOLES not dvd players, or entertainment centers.

lol, yea mate, sony came out and crushed them, now microsoft come out and do the same , give up nintendo!
#10.1 TGD on 13 Nov 2003 - 18:31
Microsoft have "crushed" Nintendo? Since when?
#10.2 \\Coroner// on 13 Nov 2003 - 18:58
Nintento posts its first loss since 1962 when they started.
Seems a long time to go with no loss. That should spell death to nintendo alright.
#10.3 Mystical112 on 13 Nov 2003 - 19:39
that's what im saying....
go nintendo!..
#11 The Teaser on 13 Nov 2003 - 17:34
it dont matter what company dies and dont, i wouldnt give a f**k if Sony died!
At the end of the day, it's what a company can produce, let the best machine win, simple as that
#12 Destian on 13 Nov 2003 - 18:09
Yea nintendo, die die die!

A world in which i didn't own Windwaker, Prime, F-zero, Eternal Darkness, Mario Sunshine, Rogue Leader, and all the other great games released/or soon to be released would be so much more fun!

Die, Nintendo, Die!

Virtual Boy SP...

probably some time of online wireless gameboy type deal...
(1 reply) #15 ShiZZa on 13 Nov 2003 - 19:06
Nintendo will never die. One reason alone. Even if they didn't make the Game Boy / Console they would still make money. Do you know how Nintendo was making money off Atari in the day? The Carts. Do you know what still uses and pays nintendo fees today still? XBox / PS2 / Anything that is a portable memory container. So your USB pen drives / Xbox memory cards / PS memory cards. you name it nintendo is there in one shape or another.

Next its not 100% Nintendo's fault, but im not saying its partly not. Heres a new mix to the problem when PS 1 was release and developers wanted to create on it because they could put more on CD. Sony made them sign contracts that wouldn't allow them to write for other platforms. Thats why in the resecent years we have been seeing more games go all 3 platforms because Sony's contracts are done and no developer would be nuts enuff to sign something like that anymore. Might also be why Nintendo waited so long to release the Cube because it knew contracts would start breaking around that time. So with this the Cube might have had a design to be like the Virtual Boy a steping stone. The Virtual Boy was just some R&D for there Polygon engine and they boxed it up to make some cash off it.

Still today if someone can point out a game that dates after Wave Race 64 or Mario 64 that has better liquid effects / water effects / with AI on it other then a game made by Nintendo on the cube. Then flame me. But i haven't seen better water on any system then Nintendo sence the 64 and the 64 was very old.

-Just my 2 cents- Flamers Flame on because thats all you have better todo.
#15.1 stezo2k on 13 Nov 2003 - 19:18
very nice post there mate my oppinion for the GC loosing nintendo money is due to the huge range of games for kids, as games are evolving, we are growing out of kiddie based games
(1 reply) #16 Joshie on 13 Nov 2003 - 19:29
I think Nintendo would be much better off if it didn't have that psychopath in charge, running in circles, masturbating to his bloody seal of quality, which, like everything else that winds up dog-eared, has lost its charm over the years.
#16.1 Miran on 14 Nov 2003 - 00:42
Yay then all consoles will be par.
#17 Scorpio on 13 Nov 2003 - 21:55
I wish some morons would read that this was from the six months ended Sept. 30. Face it: it's not "another failure". The XBox is the only failure, since it loses money for every unit sold.
#18 paulhaskew on 13 Nov 2003 - 22:27
scorpio is correct...

Nintendo and Microsofts game division are both lost this time around Sony has like 2X the installed user base of both companies combined. Wait for the next generation of consoles maybe Nintendo or MS will pull off a win. Although I would doubt it as MS's system probably wont be compatible with XBox1 and Nintendo usualy doesnt do backwards either (Game boy is the exception and it works for them) Sony on the other hand has stated that PS3 will be compatible with PS2 and maybe PS1. So all these people with PS2's will probably buy PS3's unless Nintendo or MS can come up with something waaayyyy better then PS3 and its Cell procesor (what ever the hell that is..) Things will be very interesting indeed
