- 1. Content that helps people do their jobs.
An example here is Microsoft bCentral's Web tools, a suite of software products that helps a lot of people do their jobs more effectively. Another is my subscription to The Wall Street Journal's online edition, which my company agrees to cover. If you can help people succeed in their work, you have a good shot at having people pay for your offerings.
- 2. Content that helps people manage their money.
This ranges from online banking sites to electronic trading sites such as eTrade and CharlesSchwab.com, and from mutual-fund giants such as Fidelity to small but influential financial advisers spread across the country. People will pay for money management and investment advice, with the idea that the return will be greater than the cost of the content and research tools.
- 3. Content that helps people manage their appearance and love life.
Great examples so far has been the online weight-loss sites such as eDiets, DietWatch.com and DietSmart.com, and dating sites such as Match.com. All offer advice and/or interactive tools, and keep users engaged for lengthy subscription periods (ah, yes, some end up getting married, too).
- 4. Content with a deep emotional connection to people's lives.
The best example here might be Major League Baseball's online broadcasts through RealNetworks (yes, exclusivity helps!). The audience includes not only baseball fans listening to their hometown team's broadcasts at work, but also transplants listening from afar to the teams they grew up rooting for. "It's nice to hear a familiar voice calling the game," Rainie says. Also in this category: The radio stations you listened to growing up, which you can get on the Net but no other way because you've moved away. Another example is Classmates.com, a Web site to reunite school chums.
- 5. Paid programming or features "bundled" or added on to free content.
The jury remains out on this new trend, in which Web operators charge for new offerings or product suites, rather than simply going from free to paid with no value-add. Think of Yahoo!, which now has 25 different subscription offerings on top of its free content, e-mail and search engine services, and Hotmail, which charges for additional e-mail storage and services. Think of sites such as MSN Money, now charging for online bill paying; ABCNews.com and RealNetworks (again), now charging for audio and video streaming of broadcast feeds; or Salon.com and ESPN.com, which offer premium content for a fee beyond their free offerings. Much of this is in the experimentation phase, but winners will emerge.
- 6. Content that optimizes the Web as a medium.
American Greetings reportedly has built the Web's largest paid subscription base, largely because of the Internet-quality of its offerings. (Similarly, MSN has done an impressive job with its Egreetings.com site.) In December 2001, Cleveland-based American Greetings began charging $11.95 to visit its most popular card sites — AmericanGreetings.com, BlueMountain.com and eGreetings.com. Within three months, it had nearly 1 million subscribers. Another strong performer on the Web has been ConsumerReports.org, which has drawn high marks for its interactive features and product comparisons.
- 7. Content for recreation and entertainment.
Fantasy baseball, fantasy football, college recruiting sites and other sites for the hard-core sports fan will draw niche followings as long they provide useful content. Beyond that, there are porn and gambling sites, which have been among the biggest moneymakers on the Web. Just how successful has the online porn industry been in getting people to pay? No definitive research has been done to answer this question, says Rainie. But a Penn State University study recently found that Web search queries related to porn and sex, as well as entertainment and recreation, were dwindling in percentage. At the same time, searches related to business, travel and e-commerce were rapidly increasing. So perhaps porn's success is leveling off.
